What do you want to see on this blog?

Posted by battye in Development, Moderating, Modifications, Styles, Support with the tags on April 14th, 2009

I touched on this in an article at my own site last month, but it is worth mentioning here as well.

This blog currently covers a wide range of topics relating to how to run your forum (How many forums should I create?, How Many Moderators Do You Really Need?, etc), to technical aspects about phpBB and MODs (Injection Vulnerabilities, Templating just got easier, etc) and even general posts about the phpBB project itself (Talkin bout Area51, Londonvasion Re-Cap – phpBB Ascraeus, etc). We would like some feedback from the community to get an idea about the sort of things you would like to read in the blog posts.

Our questions to you is: are there any topics in particular you would like to see posted in the blog? Are there other categories of articles (besides the ones mentioned above) which we need to focus on more?

Please give us your feedback by replying in the comments box below.

Thanks!

I’v recently been trying to gather as much information about caching in phpBB3. I’m still very puzzled about how to use it aswell so maybe a blog post about that could be nice.

I would like to hear of the overall vision of phpBB, not an exact feature roadmap, but where the project is intended to go in 5-10 years time if ideal circumstances were under the development and other teams control.

I think it would be interesting to see the collective thoughts of the team as to the direction of web forums in general and even perhaps the web applications overall.

One thing that I would love to see more of is the development process. Perhaps a log of what the developers have been doing to make phpbb even better. This might include features planned for future releases, etc. This would also give the community a good opportunity to respond with ideas.

The blogs of projects; any project; always talking about the ideas that the developers work in currently and the features that will be added in next version !

blog just like press, new things in the right time

thank you !

I like the current mix of postings, although I wonder whether the very generic community management stuff should maybe be left to sites like managingcommunities.com. On the other hand, not everyone may know such sites, so even the generic stuff could have a place here. Everything that is specifically related to phpBB definately has a place here, and I have enjoyed every post made on this blog (don’t worry about the frequency, as long as the quality is good, there is nothing wrong with the current frequency). As suggested above, more insight in what the development team is up to would be nice. How things are moving along, maybe changing insights into what has been revealed at Londonvasion (which is quite a long time ago by now, so some things are bound to have changed).

Tips and Tricks to use on a forum would be good, or like a MOD or Style of the month etc would be pretty cool.

Posted by Josh on April 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm:

Many of the users who wish to create things for their site (mods and styles), like myself, know some information about php. The problem that many of us have is how to integrate our work with the phpbb3 framework. For example, how do we know what files we need to edit in the phpbb3 framework? Also, what do all the files mean , how do they work, and what is their purpose? Questions like those, and there are many more, are pondered by many people like myself.

+1 I would like to know more about future releases of phpBB, what’s planned, how things evolve from ideas to Alpha release, Beta, RC, etc.

And maybe talk a little more about MODs, do some quarterly top based on downloads, ratings, and your opinion.

Frequency could be better; once a week, I’d say. Content has been OK so far; the majority of articles have interested me.

I am, however, annoyed that I sent some feedback by PM to wGEric and he has neither replied nor taken any action.

Posted by Eric Martindale on April 15th, 2009 at 3:46 pm:

I concur with @Eelke – I really think you guys should leave the community management stuff out. phpBB is a product, so more posts about the development process would be good – and some explanations on the decisions made so far!

@Dog_Cow is also right on track – a higher frequency of postings would be great!

The whole point of a blog is to communicate back and forth with your community, so post articles that seem relevant to your team – just make sure to read, participate, and respond to the comments!

Posted by Dovyski on April 15th, 2009 at 4:47 pm:

A higher frequency would be great, I agree. I feel so happy when my Google Reader account hightlights the phpBB blog feed 😀

About the topics, I would like to see more information about phpBB relateted projects, like the ones at code.phpbb.com. I am looking forward to reading here something about AutoMOD/UMIL development, for example.

Posted by Anubis_The_Jackal on April 15th, 2009 at 10:49 pm:

I do not mind community management, however I would also like to see more insight into development – and also perhaps user tips, tricks, simple hacks, etc that improve on what is already there.

I dunno.

Ice cream? Phpbb flavored Ice Cream. Tastes like sunbeams and freedom.

Also, rumors about phpbb 4 would be nice.

Posted by Eelke on April 16th, 2009 at 7:18 am:

I can help you with that. I hear that what is now called 3.2 will be rebadged to 4.0 in the near future, because all backwards compatibility with 3.0 will be broken. Expect a release next week.

😛

I would like a RSS feed from the blog.

Posted by battye on April 16th, 2009 at 12:28 pm:

Eelke: Keep the rumours coming, I could then create a blog post to discuss them! 😛

Thank you to everyone for your feedback, please keep it coming! 🙂

I forgot to mention tips and tricks like Dan and Anubis_The_Jackal said.

Maybe more tutorials too, updates of the Knowledge Base http://www.phpbb.com/kb.
And more screenshots or example file of results of those tutorials.

I think it good to have to blog focused on main page also with user comments.

Its good bcs its like a direct communication from team leaders of phpBB to the community so we know where phpBB is heading for the feature.

Its a good start that you have done sofar.

Topics and heading suggestions could be like.

What going on? – describe the latest developments a little bit and why its important for what etc…

What do we expect to see in near future for phpBB? – telling a little bit what could be a vision of new futures of phpBB and other releated topics like integration with other open source apps etc

This month tips & tricks how to improve your phpBB forum for:

– speed
– security
– user friendliness
– etc

Mod of the month.

Developer of the month

etc

your experience in college
phpbb team work, how it is done, talk about developers in general

Posted by Ger on April 17th, 2009 at 6:18 am:

There’s a difference between a knowledge base and a blog. Stuff about MOD’s, howto’s etc. shouldn’t be in the blog when the same site has a KB.

I’d say: put some more stuff about the development of the product. What type of problems do you run into? What’s to be expected of 3.2? That kind of stuff.

Posted by Jwxie on April 17th, 2009 at 1:35 pm:

Ger I agree, let;s talk more about the 3.2 and plus, more about the development team work
they see to be a bit “mysterious”

i’d love to see a step-by-step introduction to the software, aimed at young students or beginner users of phpbb.

Posted by Black Antitoon on April 22nd, 2009 at 6:59 am:

@Eelke: If this will happen, we’ll have to wait 4 or 5 years… at least if they take the same time they took for 2.2 -> 3.0. OMG!

Yes, I’d also like to know something more about development. Nobody will blame you if you talk about a feature which is then removed, but please let us know!

First and foremost i check daily for any news regarding updates and especially anything talking about the next major release.. but there never is 🙁

that and security talk

I like the suggestions for sharing features in upcoming releases and discussion of the longer term vision for phpBB.

I’d also like developer bootcamps — discussions of how we can develop for phpBB, both in terms of MODs or becoming part of the development group itself. For example, is there a class diagram or module decomposition for phpBB? If so, where?

Spam seems to be a large problem at the moment and a lot of users are asking for help regarding it. How about a blog post on spam and spambots?

Posted by Darren on May 26th, 2009 at 11:28 am:

I actually found the community management the most interesting as I am not really technically minded. I enjoy the different falvours the blog has, some comment on direction of the software development would be interesting and I would say some tips on customisation / styling would be neat too. This wouldn’t need be how do I create my own style but more the choices available, considerations for updating. I am currently talking to my web developer about a CSS overwrite to create a style such that updates wouldn’t be compromised so along those lines would be brilliant.

Posted by Darren on May 26th, 2009 at 11:32 am:

Spam avoidance would be a nice topic. I have just added a custom question that only a genuine person would know. (When was Arsenal FC formed, it’s an Arsenal website). By default the entry is 0 but an answer between 1000 and 2000 is required before the form is accepted. Seems to have worked wonders!

I’d like to see an on-going section of the blog dedicated to keeping us up to date with progress on upcoming releases of phpBB3.
We are left entirely in the dark on what is going on in development and that’s a bad thing, everyone who asks things like “when will version ‘?’ be ready” get’s the same canned reply of “when it’s ready”.
I find that type of response rude and derogatory, it would be great to be kept in the loop so to speak on future release development.
It would go a long ways to developing stronger bonds between the phpbb.com staff and us the member-base.

Generally releases of phpBB3.0 are maintenance releases, so we fix bugs. Not exactly much to write about. 😉

We are left entirely in the dark on what is going on in development and that’s a bad thing, everyone who asks things like “when will version ‘?’ be ready” get’s the same canned reply of “when it’s ready”.

If we give dates people get annoyed when it doesn’t happen, we have very rough ideas of when we would like things to happen.

I find that type of response rude and derogatory, it would be great to be kept in the loop so to speak on future release development.

Like I said we 3.0 is mostly maintenance so the number of things to ‘scream’ about is limited. However, see http://www.phpbb.com/blog/category/development/
